About the Developer

Marek Urban Ottawa Website Designer

I have extensive experience in website design and development, web accessibility, and web based content management systems. I work with popular open-source systems such as Joomla and Drupal to create W3C XHTML 1.0 and CSS 3.0 standards compliant and accesible websites.

I have also worked for Library and Archives Canada on the Canadian Digital Information Strategy linkicon. The initiative aims to improve access to digital information and establish a national infrastructure for the preservation of Canadian digital heritage.

I hold a Master’s degree in Information Science linkicon, a Bachelor's degree in Arts, and an Honours degree in Social Science from the University of Western Ontario.

I work and live with my wife and children in Ottawa, where I enjoy meeting friends and clients for some fair-trade coffee.

My Design Approach

Your Visitors are Most Important

Rich graphics have become an integral part of Web 2.0 trends in design, but images and graphics alone are not the reasons why visitors come back to a website. Even the simplest of websites should offer to visitors the following:

  • well developed and organized content
  • well structured and intuitive design
  • ability to locate resources, services, or products quickly and easily

Accessibility

I design accessible and flexible websites that meet your needs and expectations. The separation of content (the XHTML code) and presentation (the CSS styling sheets), in compliance with current W3C standards, makes the web increasingly more accessible to people with disabilities.

Common Look and Feel

I work with various tools, such as Dreamweaver, Photoshop, and Illustrator to create elegant websites that are easy to update, browse, and search, while preserving a common look and feel across pages.

You know you have reached perfection of design not when you have nothing more to add, but when you have nothing more to take away.

--Antoine de Saint Exupéry

Search Engine Optimization

Search engine optimization (SEO) should not be an add-on expense, but a part of well planned and executed web design strategy. It should include appropriate use of headings, meta tags, alternative text for media, xml sitemap, and above all a design which separates content from presentation.

Client Satisfaction

I will work with you until your expectations are met and you are satisfied that the new website reflects your ideas and serves the intended purpose.

Please see the overview of the Design Process to better understand what you can expect from me and the level of control you will have throughout the process.
